With John Boehner's resignation as Speaker of the House, the race is wide open to see who the next Speaker will be. Especially now that the heir-apparent, McCarthy, has withdrawn his name from the race. Now there is no front-runner, and it's wide open. Commentators across the nation are speculating on which member of the House could gather enough support to secure the choice leadership position.
But why?
I mean, why limit ourselves to sitting members of the House? All the Constitution says is that the members of the House shall choose a speaker... it doesn't say that said speaker has to be an elected member of Congress. ANYBODY can be speaker. And while hilarious images of Speaker Pee-Wee Herman dance in my head, we must keep in mind that we are faced with an historic opportunity.
With no candidate in the House viewed as likely to receive majority support, why don't we think outside the box and find a suitable candidate who isn't a Washington insider? This is what we say we want, after all, so why not pursue it?
Think about it. A lot of people don't feel we are represented well in Congress. Many think a new Speaker will simply focus on party over country, and again, the public is ill-served. What could be more perfect than to use this opportunity to select someone who is neither Republican nor Democrat, a person who could therefore run the House in an impartial and even-handed manner? A person who could spare some thought for the people that the House is supposed to serve, instead of the political parties that accumulate and use power as a matter of course?
So, we need to find someone who fits the bill, who can do the job, and who might garner support from a significant faction of the House. Think of it, a Speaker elected with support from both parties... how historical would THAT be?
So don't fail me now, let's get a name. Who would YOU like to see as Speaker of the House?
