Recently, a few of my friends have been running with a meme that I've seen before. Since it seems to be cropping up again, I figured I'd go ahead and look at it. Have you seen someone propose that we "treat guns like cars?" In this particular meme, shown below, it includes the phrase "Let's make cars and guns equal!"
Of course, this is a meme by gun-control nuts to show how "reasonable" they're being, totally ignoring the illogic inherent in the supposition that regulations aimed at one thing are interchangeable with regulations aimed at something else... but let's take a look at this.
In order to "make cars and guns equal," we'd have to do more than load guns with the same regulations we use on cars, we would need to load cars with the same (or similar) regulations as we use on guns. In this analysis, I'll not only use existing gun laws, but also laws that were previously in effect that gun-control nuts would dearly love to have in effect in the future. Item #10, below, is based upon a proposal near and dear to gun-control nuts' hearts, even though the technology to achieve this doesn't yet exist.
So, for those of you gun-control nuts agitating this meme, understand what it means before you start screaming.

1) State governments can pass laws to make driver's licenses "may issue," with county sheriffs determining who really has a need to drive, and everybody else being denied a license.
2) Driver's licenses will only be issued to those who pass a NICS background check.
3) Cars will only be sold to those who can pass a NICS background check... if it takes three days to get that approval, then that's the way it goes.
4) Cars would be subject to a three-day waiting period, and the buyer must wait for three days after purchasing it to drive it off the lot.
5) Cars that look extra fast are subject to arbitrary bans on the logic that such appearances make the cars more dangerous.
6) Cars that have the ability to drive faster than the national speed limit of 70 MPH are subject to arbitrary bans on the logic that such ability can only be used to break the law and are therefore dangerous.
7) No car can be sold with a gas tank capable of holding more than three gallons of gas, because the purpose of larger tanks can only be to avoid capture by police, and who really NEEDS larger gas tanks, anyway?
8) When not in use, every car must be emptied of gasoline, locked in a separate location from the gas, and the gas must also be secured. Children's access to both must be strictly limited.
9) Cars cannot be driven within 1000 yards of a school or church.
10) No car can be sold without identity-verifying "Smart Car" technology that will not permit anyone except the owner to drive the car.
11) Car dealerships would have to obtain a special license from the Federal government to sell cars, and they would be subject to stringent reviews by BATF officials. During such audits, even slight typographical errors could result in thousands of dollars in fines.
12) It will be illegal to purchase a car with the intention of giving it to another person. This is a "straw purchase," and could net the perpetrator five to 15 years in prison.
